When teaching Jesus Christ's gospel as a missionary, I soon get the question "how do you know if it's true." I've come to expect this question and know so well what it can lead to, that I'm rather disappointed if it doesn't come up on it's own. I've found that these are the three basic things that everyone should be doing to start finding the truth about God's plan and his relationship to us.
- Study the doctrine in the Holy Bible and Book of Mormon, as well as the words of modern prophets.
- Live the commandments, to see how they improve and bless your life. John 7:17
- Pray in faith and ask God in the name of Christ, if the message is true. James 1:5-6
What's happened as you've tried these three things? Can you think of anything else that has helped you to confirm the truth about God's plan for us?

Great advice Elder Moxley! It is something which I know has certainly helped me to come to know these things are true. The only thing I would add is to make sure we are consistent and repeat the efforts we give. I know for me the spirit grows slowly and it is the diligence we give that helps us to see a real difference.
Very good point. I've heard somewhere that the Lord will match our answer with the diligence we put into looking for it. In other words, if we expect a big answer we should put a big effort into it. How much effort we put into receiving the answer is a good indicator of how well we're really ready to listen to it.
To the anonymous gentleman who just spammed my blog with a link that does not relate to the points at hand. You may want to read the Book of Mormon. 1830 edition or 1981 edition makes little difference. I've read them both and the message is the same. Will you read them?
