Keeping a Friend

Many people who don’t understand our beliefs, feel that our emphasis on doing all we can to keep the commandments, means we believe we are saved by our works.  Elder Bednar corrected this by stating one of the real reasons for keeping commandments.  We keep the commandments to invite the Holy Ghost into our lives.  All of the outward ordinances and other efforts to follow the commandments invite the spirit if we do it for the right reasons.  “Thus everything the Savior’s gospel teaches us to do and become is intended to bless us with the companionship of the Holy Ghost”.

Elder Bednar's talk was in the October 2010 LDS General Conference
I see the Holy Ghost, as a vital friend and guide in our efforts to return to our heavenly Father.  No one can deny the importance of having the Holy Ghost in their life if they've ever felt it.   The influence of the Holy Ghost in our lives is one of the greatest blessings we can experience.  Its company brightens our lives, guides us through our trials, confirms truth, and builds our faith and leads us further to Jesus Christ.  Certainly we want to do all we can to encourage it to stay with us from day to day.

If you are unfamiliar with who the Holy Ghost is, this film explains it beautifully.
